Intraaortic Balloon Pump (IABP)

Timing Errors

Early inflation

Balloon inflates before the Aortic valve is closed which results in

  • Premature closure of AoV
  • ↑ LVEDV/LVEDP
  • ↑ PCWP
  • ↑LV afterload
  • Aortic regurgitation

Late inflation

Balloon inflates after the dicrotic notch resulting in

  • Insufficient diastolic augmentation and coronary perfusion

Early deflation

Balloon deflates too early resulting in

  • Sub-optimal coronary perfusion
  • Sub-optimal afterload reduction
  • Retrograde coronary artery flow

Late deflation

Balloon deflates after onset of LV systolie resulting in

  • ↑ LV afterload
  • ↑ myocardial oxygen consumption
  • Afterload reduction is absent
  • ↓  LV ejection
